Our Associate Pastor, Fr. John Zurek.

To one and all at Saint Francis of Assisi Parish, it is a great pleasure to be here as your new associate pastor. Thank you for your kind and candid welcome.  Over time I hope to get to know you all better. As for myself, I was born and raised in Chicago, east of Midway Airport in Archer Heights. I attended Saint Bruno’s grammar school in Chicago, Saint Laurence High School in Burbank, and Loyola University in the Roger Park neighborhood. Also, I attended the Washburne in Trade School and have a degree in the culinary arts. You see, after high school, I went straight into the world of cooking working my way up to chef for the Hyatt Hotel chain. Only later on did I enter into priesthood, as a second career you might say. After graduating from Saint Mary of the Seminary in 2004, I was stationed at Saint Michael Church in Orland Park for five years. And now, I start my second term of five years here at Saint Francis. There is more to tell- perhaps for a future time. But one question I should address, it has been asked many times in the short span of time I have been here at Saint Francis. Parishioners have ask me,“ What’s your favorite thing you like to cook?” With out hesitation I answer boldly, “Chocolate!” So, if you are a chocolate lover, extra kudos for you. As I start my time here at Saint Francis, and people ask me what I like most about Saint Francis, I can already say, without hesitation, its parishioners.                                                                                     Peace, Fr. John Zurek

Sister Bernard is a native Chicagoan and the oldest of four.  She grew up in Little Flower Parish and attended Sacred Heart High School.  In 1953 she entered the Adrian Dominican Congregation (Adrian, Michigan).  The first 8 years of her religious life were spent in education, teaching grade school in Michigan and Florida.  The next 38 years were dedicated to pharmacy after receiving a Pharm. D degree from the University of Michigan.  During this time, she also taught chemistry and hospital pharmacy at Siena Height College, Adrian, MI and at the University of Toledo College of Pharmacy.  These years of hospital pharmacy practice found her in Michigan, Kentucky, Indiana and Illinois.  A third career change occurred in 2000 when she came on board at SFA as Pastoral Associate.  "My life as a Dominican Sister has been rich and rewarding and SFA has been a great part of this richness."
